Chemeketa Communication Systems

It is important to get linked into the campus communication system ASAP - preferably before classes start - so that you will be able to receive important campus information and to access resources.

My Chemeketa E-mail is where you will receive communication from the college and from current or future students. Students using My Chemeketa to look up course information will have easy access to your e-mail information as the assigned instructor of a course. It is critical for you to check this email account in order to respond to student inquiries. This is a condition of hiring!

Please maintain and delete old messages since there is a space limitation in each account. While you are in a teaching position for the college, do not forward your My Chemeketa e-mail to any other personal or business related account. For student records confidentiality and professional reasons, it is required that you respond to student e-mails from your My Chemeketa account.

Business cards are available to part-time faculty and can be requested through your dean's office.

Workspace resources—Your associate dean will assign you to one of the staff office buildings on the Salem campus that have designated work areas for part-time faculty with a copier, fax machine, computer work stations and phone access. Outreach campuses also have computers available for drop-in use. The faculty secretary in your work designated area can help you in a variety of ways including software and Internet assistance.

Campus mailboxes are available to all part-time faculty.  If you have not been assigned one, see your supervisor or department secretary.  Include your mailbox location on your syllabus if you want students to be able to turn in assignments outside of class.  It is a good idea to check your mailbox whenever you are on campus.

Staff IDs are available from Public Safety in the lower level of Building 2, 503.399.5023.  You will need your staff ID for library/media use. This card can be adapted to act as an electronic access keycard to various buildings on campus (Requires dean approval).

Voice mail:  To request a phone number for a voice mailbox, contact your supervisor. Your voice mailbox number may be added to your syllabus as a way for students to contact you. You can easily access your voice mailbox from off campus. Your department secretary will be able to show you how to retrieve messages from off campus.

Web presence: All Chemeketa Classes Have A Web Presence

The My Chemeketa portal automatically creates a link to a Course Homepage for each course offered at Chemeketa. The Course Homepage is available to the instructor and students enrolled by clicking on the "My Courses" tab in My Chemeketa.

Note: If a course has been setup to use the eLearn course tools, the course title link will go directly to the login screen for eLearn.

The Course Homepage provided through My Chemeketa contains course tools for posting announcements, links, files, chatting, e-mail and a message board. The assigned instructor also has the ability to send email to all enrolled students in the course through the student e-mail system. If you are not seeing a homepage link for a class that is assigned to you, please contact your supervisor's office.

The Course Homepage is created automatically at the time of course input. The use of online enhancements is entirely up to the instructor. If you are not going to incorporate these features into your class activities and communication, please take a minute to turn off the applications you will not be using by clicking on the Applications link under the heading Configuration Tools in the left column.

There are additional online features available by posting web materials using eLearn………

The eLearn System: Chemeketa's learning management system is named the “eLearn” system, and is sometimes known as WebCT, BlackBoard, Campus Edition, or CE8. Beginning fall term 2009, we use an externally hosted solution for the eLearn system. This hosting solution will allow our current eLearn system to be as secure and stable as possible, monitored and supported 24/7.

The eLearn system has tools which facilitate online learning, including:

For more information or help with eLearn, please contact the Tech Hub at 503.399.7873.

Tech Hub—The Technology Hub can provide assistance in the development and incorporation of technology and web enhanced features into your courses. The Tech Hub is located in Building 9, Room 106 and the phone number is 503.399.7399.
